Historically, railways were built between colonies and not between neighbors in Africa, causing more trade to occur with Europe rather than other African countries. A continent-wide free trade agreement – the African Continental Free Trade Area has been signed by African countries; a step towards economic development in the region. The African Continental Free Trade Area will be home to more than a billion people, 55 countries, and would surpass EU to become the biggest free trade area in the world!
